Sustainability has been of interest to me since the 60’s, and was central to the Development Plan of Arcosanti. But we tend to miss the gorilla due to in-attentional blindness. “See:” The Crisis of Civilization, Surviving Progress, The Careerists, The Fuck-it Point, Limits to Growth, and Wait a minute. The collapse of complex systems due to in-attentional blindness is central to Millennium Blues and Year of the Jaguar. Once we reach the tipping point, the necessity for change will becomes obvious. It is my hope that love will inspire optimism to overcome the current darkness. Currently, our approach is the equivalent of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Although our circumstances inspires music as found in the Swedish proverb: “Those who wish to sing always find a song,” but until we learn UBUNTU, our situation is dire (“An anthropologist proposed a game to children in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the children that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run, they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that when one could have had all the fruits for himself, they said, ‘UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?’ (‘UBUNTU’ in the Xhosa culture means: ‘I am because we are.)”
